García-Diego International Prize. Award
Meeting on 15 March 2022, the judges for the 11th edition of the García-Diego International Prize found all the studies submitted to be of notable quality. In the absence of a majority vote on which was most meritorious, they unanimously decided to declare the prize void and award three 1000-euro second prizes to each of the following treatises:

Desafío contra la fiebre amarilla. Medicina, tecnología química y biotecnología contra la pandemia que vino del mar (ss.XVII-XX) [Yellow fever and its challenges: medicine, chemical engineering and biotechnology to combat a sea-borne pandemic (seventeenth to twentieth centuries].

Juanelo Turriano’s artifice

The Spanish national TV second channel programme El condensador de Fluzo devoted its 10 March edition to Juanelo y el ingenio de Toledo [Juanelo and the artifice at Toledo].

Julio Porres de Mateo, fellow of the Royal Academy of the Plastic Arts and History of Toledo and member of our Foundation’s Advisory Commission, participated in the programme.

First Comic and Civil Engineering Show

Vertebra!, an association of Spanish civil engineers, is hosting the country’s First Comic and Civil Engineering Show, a stimulating initiative that seeks to use comics as a vehicle for raising public awareness of the societal role of civil engineering.

The event will be held on 26 and 27 March at Madrid Central for Design (Matadero Madrid).

Fundación Juanelo Turriano is one of the collaborating institutions.

Visit to Fundación Juanelo Turriano
On 23 February Fundación Juanelo Turriano hosted a visit by a number of Iberia Airline Veterans’ Association members. They were afforded a first-hand view of the foundation’s activities and the research resources open to scholars and others interested in the history of Spanish engineering and technology.

Eighth Congress on Industrial Heritage and Public Works

Abstracts for the Eighth Congress on Industrial Heritage and Public Works, subtitled Perspectivas de género para el patrimonio industrial. Trabajos de (no) andar por casa [Gender perspectives for the industrial heritage: work (not) for around the house] may be submitted through the 31 March deadline.

Organised by the Spanish branch of the International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage (TICCIH), the event will be held at the Encartada Balmaseda Museum in Balmaseda, Bizkaia, from 1 to 4 June 2022.

49th ICOHTEC Symposium. Submissions
Papers for the 49th ICOHTEC Symposium can be submitted through the 30 April 2022 deadline.

This 49th edition, subtitled Technology-Based and Technology-Generated Decisions, will be held virtually on 24 and 25 September and 15 and 16 October 2022.

Eighteenth century engineers. The Spanish Army’s Corps of Engineers

A lecture entitled Eighteenth century engineers. The Spanish Army’s Corps of Engineers will be delivered at 18:30 on 24 March at the Chartered Institute of Civil Engineers of Castile and Leon.

Moderated by Jesús de Miguel Bravo, civil engineer and Spanish Army’s Corps of Engineers reserve colonel, the event will be held both in person and virtually.

Javier Jordán de Urríes has published an article in his InvestigArt blog entitled Las vistas de puertos de España: Mariano Sánchez copista de Vernet [Views of Spanish ports: Mariano Sánchez, Vernet copyist].

Javier Jordán de Urries, PhD. in art history and National Heritage curator, specialises in eighteenth and nineteenth century art, and more specifically in court painting.

In 2014 Fundación Juanelo Turriano published a book entitled Una mirada ilustrada: los puertos españoles de Mariano Sánchez [An enlightened gaze: Mariano Sánchez’s Spanish ports].
