García-Diego International Prize awarded

At its 8 March 2016 meeting held at the Fundación Juanelo Turriano headquarters, the judges committee unanimously decided to award the García-Diego Prize jointly to:


Eduardo Díaz-Pavón Cuaresma for the paper entitled 
El hundimiento del tercer depósito del Canal de Isabel II en 1905 [Collapse of the Canal de Isabel II third water reservoir in 1905]; and 
José Luis Sánchez Peral for the paper entitled Proyectistas y constructores del Canal del Henares: una centenaria obra hidráulica inglesa a las puertas de Madrid [Canal del Henares designers and builders: 100-year-old British waterworks just outside Madrid].

The 12 000-euro prize will be shared by the two awardees.

The two second prizes, for 1000 euros each, were awarded to:

Víctor Pérez Álvarez for the paper La implantación del reloj público en Castilla y la medida del tiempo en la Baja Edad Media [The institution of the public clock in Castile and time measurement in the Lower Middle Ages]

Nelson Arellano Escudero for the paper La ingeniería y el descarte artefactual de la desalación solar de agua. Las industrias de las salinas, Sierra Gorda y Oficina Domeyko (1872-1907) [Engineering and the artefactual dismissal of solar desalination; the Sierra Gorda and Oficina Domeyko salt industries (1872-1907)].

Philip II. Devices and machines. An exhibition

The travelling exhibition entitled Philip II, devices and machines will open on 18 March at Segovia’s Royal Mint Museum.

Produced by the Centre for Public Works Studies (CEDEX)/Centre for Historic Studies on Public Works and Urban Planning (CEHOPU) and Fundación Juanelo Turriano, this showing focuses on the reign of Spain’s most prominent Habsburg monarch, who ruled the country during the European Renaissance.

Seventh edition of the Young Researchers’ Award (2016)

The Royal Academy of Engineering, in conjunction with Fundación Pro Rebus Academiae, announces the 2016 edition of the Agustín de Betancourt y Molina and Juan López de Peñalver prizes.

Engineering researchers who were under the age of 40 on 1 January 2016 and have conducted a significant portion of their research in Spain are eligible for the Agustín de Betancourt y Molina prize.

The Juan López de Peñalver prize is awarded to individuals or teams, most of whose members are under 40, who have authored professional contributions to or innovations or outstanding achievements in any realm of Spanish engineering.

Eduardo Torroja Engineering and Architecture Prize

The Ministry of Public Works announces a new edition of its Eduardo Torroja Engineering and Architecture Prize, a distinction awarded to interdisciplinary teams of Spanish engineers and architects for works harmonising architecture, structural design and construction.

Works completed between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2015 that have not competed for the distinction in preceding editions may be nominated for the prize.
