THE PERAL MOVED TO THE CARTAGENA NAVAL MUSEUM

peral submarine

The Peral, a submarine launched in 1888, has been moved to the Cartagena Dockyard for consolidation and restoration.

The Fundación Juanelo Turriano defrayed the cost of building the support platform for the permanent display at the Cartagena Naval Museum with late nineteenth century materials in store at the dockyard, and moving it and the submarine to their new location.

CRISTIANO ZANETTI DEFENDS A PhD. DISSERTATION ON JUANELO TURRIANO

DISSERTATION ON JUANELO TURRIANO

Cristiano Zanetti, researcher with the European University Institute at Florence, recently submitted and defended a PhD. dissertation entitled Janello Torriani (Cremona 1500 ca.-Toledo 1585): a Social History of Invention between Renaissance and Scientific Revolution at the EUI's Department of History and Civilisation.

The members of the jury, reputed professors Bartolomé Yun Casalilla (EUI), Mario Biagioli (University of California), Maria Antonietta Visceglia (La Sapienza, Roma) and Antonella Romano (EUI), praised the thesis for its overall quality and its contribution to a fuller understanding of Juanelo Turriano and his era.

At a session organised by the Fundación Juanelo Turriano during the ICOHTEC symposium held in Barcelona in July 2012, Cristiano Zanetti delivered a conference entitled “Engineering from Filippo Brunelleschi to Janello Torriani: clockmaking and humanist culture in the making of a respectable profession”.
