NEW BOOK: HISTORIA DE LA ESFERA ARMILAR |
| The Fundación Juanelo Turriano, in conjunction with the Universitat de Barcelona, has published the book Historia de la Esfera Armilar. Su desarrollo en las diferentes culturas. Authored by internationally renowned specialist in the history of Arabic-Muslim astronomy Mercè Comes, deceased in 2010, this is the first book on the history of the armillary sphere, an instrument that was used for at least twenty centuries across a wide range of cultures. 39th ICOHTEC SYMPOSIUM |
| After a full week of sessions at the Barcelona School of Mechanical Engineering (ETSEIB), the 39th ICOHTEC (International Committee for the History of Technology) Symposium, was adjourned on Saturday 14 July. The congress was a resounding success, with over 200 participants from 40 countries presenting 180 communications. The local organising team was headed by Antoni Roca-Rossell, who was elected to sit on the ICOHTEC Executive Committee. Fundación Juanelo Turriano manager Bernardo Revuelta stepped down from committee membership as provided in the by-laws, as his four-year term had drawn to an end. Go to ICOHTEC |
ICOHTEC AWARD CEREMONY |
| The ICOHTEC Prize for Young Scholars, sponsored by Fundación Juanelo Turriano and worth 3 000 euros, was awarded to Hermione Giffard of the University of London for her paper "The development and production of turbojet aero-engines in Britain, Germany and the United States, 1936-1945". A total of 24 submissions were received from authors in 10 countries for this third edition of the prize. Fundación Juanelo Turriano President, Victoriano Muñoz Cava, presented the prize during the dinner held on Friday 13 July. |
