News View All Dissemination, tourism, education and demographic challenge award News The I International Congress on Public Works Heritage and Civil Engineering closed on 28 September with a ceremony at which awards were given out for the best papers in the various topic areas. Fundación Juanelo Turriano sponsored the award for the area of Dissemination, tourism, education and demographic challenge, which was won by Evelio Teijón López-Zuazo, civil engineer and lecturer at the University of Salamanca, for his paper Fondeando en Fernando Gallego Herrera: del olvido al patrimonio universal (A deep dive into Fernando Gallego Herrera: from obscurity to world heritage). Fernando Gallego was an engineer who was ahead of his time. The paper explores his main projects, such as his design for a tunnel to be built under the Strait of Gibraltar, his funicular arch, his Aerogenio aircraft, a machine for stratospheric flight with vertical take-off capability, and a system of floating bridges similar to those used to land troops at Normandy. In his day, contemporary newspapers reported all about Fernando Gallego’s work.
