Civil engineer José Eugenio Ribera Dutasta is the finest example of just how extraordinarily diversified an engineer’s work can become. His professional career spanned the last twenty years of the nineteenth century and the first third of the twentieth century. During that time Ribera served the nation as an engineer, founded and managed cutting-edge construction firms and designed public works projects of all kinds, some of which number among the most remarkable of their sort. He was a builder of landmark iron and steel constructions and the foremost introducer of reinforced concrete in Spain, and he extended his field of action to what were then colonial territories, such as Morocco and Guinea. A prolific author of technical treatises and informational texts on engineering, as a professor at the Madrid School of Civil Engineering, Ribera taught other great engineers, like Torroja, Sánchez del Río and Fernández Casado. This book covers the different facets of Ribera’s life as engineer, entrepreneur and innovator, without overlooking the other parts of his life story that explain Ribera and his place in the world.
