Summer course (2022) Courses This summer course will be delivered under the aegis of the Technical University of Madrid’s (UPM) Deputy Rectorate of Strategy and Academic Governance at Don Luis de Borbón Palace, Boadilla del Monte, Madrid, on 18 to 22 July 2022.. The social, economic, cultural and political organisation of the post-independence Hispanic-American universe entailed the establishment of new corps of engineers and scientists. Heirs of former Enlightenment and Renaissance institutions, they nonetheless embraced industrial modernisation to address new economic and cultural needs. This transition took place in both the recently created Hispanic-American republics and Spain itself. That nation-building relied on engineers was never called into doubt. Spanish twenty-first century architecture and engineering are in turn legatees of a valuable heritage worth knowing and disseminating. This course, the first stage of the Technical University of Madrid’s ambitious project to institute a standing seminar on the History of Spanish and Hispanic Science and Technology, offers an overview of the role played by Spanish architects and engineers in that long era of worldwide transition.
